Instead of pork shoulder, try slow cooking beef shoulder with some onion, tomato passata, vinegar, ground mustard and chilli powder until tender enough to pull apart. Serve in baps or rolls with coleslaw.

There is a mistake with this recipe. The recipe calls for 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, not 1/2 cup. I am the one who submitted this recipe, and e-mailed the staff about the typo. This is a great recipe, and I hope everyone enjoys it. Molly-03 Aug 2013
We use a garlic clove and a large tomato cut up instead of tomato sauce and lose the chili powder. I cook it on the stove instead of in a slow cooker for 5+ hours. This was one of my grandmother's favorite recipes back in the 1950's when soy sauce was an exotic ingredient and very difficult to find. I cook it in memory of her and luckily my husband thinks it is great too. He calls it German pulled beef.-24 Jul 2014

We are huge fans of crockpot recipes at my house. Well, maybe I should say that I am just altogether a huge fan of easy dinner ideas. The ease of them, and the fact that they can basically make themselves, yah … crock pot recipes are a savior when it comes to dinner at our house.
And, it sure helps when the slow cooker can make a slow cooked pulled beef recipe like this. I mean, where can this go wrong? Spoiler alert, it can’t go wrong.
And, I know that this is one of those crazy recipes that use beer, but it’s so good, and the beer cooks off. It’s just a fun and unique way to marinate beef, right? If you’d rather not use beer in your crock pot, you can instead make this really popular easy french dip crock pot recipe. This French Dip recipe is always really popular year round on Pinterest, too. It’s just as awesome!
On another note, if you’re looking for a slow cooker Mexican Beef, you’re in the wrong spot, this pulled beef has nothing Mexican food about it, but you can find a really super Slow Cooker Shredded Mexican Beef right here. It looks delicious, but this pulled beef recipe that I have put together for you below is more meant to be enjoyed in a hoagie and topped with some delicious melted provolone cheese.
These Crock Pot shredded beef sandwiches are a favorite here and are awesome served with a salad or french fries on the side.
Crock Pot Shredded Beef Ingredients:
- 3 pound chuck roast
- 2 cans Beef Broth (I use this kind here )
- 1 can beer (12 ounces)
- 2 envelopes dry onion soup mix
- 1 Garlic clove (minced)
- 2 t sugar
- 1 t dried oregano
- 6 hoagie buns
Place Chuck Roast in the slow cooker.
Pour broth, beer, soup mix, garlic, sugar and oregano over the meat.
Place slow cooker on low 8 hours
Remove beef to a bowl and shred with two forks or a handmixer in a plastic bowl
Split your hoagies down the middle, set on baking sheet and fill with beef mixture
Lay slices of provolone cheese on top of sandwiches and broil on low in oven until cheese is golden brown
Pulled Beef Secret Ingredient:
Mustard. Mustard is the secret.
That&rsquos a weird secret to have, but it&rsquos a good one because holy cow this beef is flavorful and perfect and you&rsquore going to probably eat so many sandwiches that you&rsquoll hate yourself afterwards.
Slather a chuck roast in good old American style yellow mustard and then season it all with our BBQ dry rub.
I make my own barbecue dry rub for this recipe as well as for my pulled pork and I get that this might sound a little intimidating, but if you have a spice cabinet, you&rsquove totally got this down. Barbecue dry rub is easy. You just dump a bunch of spices into a bowl and stir. Boom. Done.
- 3 pounds boneless beef chuck roast
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 bay leaves
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons garlic powder
- ¼ cup distilled white vinegar
- 1 (14 ounce) can tomato sauce
- ¼ cup chili powder
- salt to taste
Place the roast, onion, bay leaves, black pepper, garlic powder, and vinegar in slow cooker cover ingredients completely with water. Cover and cook on High setting until meat is very tender and falling apart, about 4 hours.
Remove meat from slow cooker and discard liquids. Return meat to slow cooker shred with fork and knife. Stir tomato sauce, chili powder, and salt into the shredded meat. Cover the cooker, and cook meat and sauce on High for an additional 2 hours.
How to make it
And here’s how to make it in the slow cooker.
The key step is to brown the beef very well. Colour = flavour, not only on the beef, but also the sauce because all the golden bits left on the skillet after browning the beef is dissolved into liquid and adds extra flavour into the sauce.
Having said that though, there have been times when I’ve skipped the browning (in emergencies only!). Then this literally becomes a dump, set and forget 10 minute prep job!

Smoky Pulled Beef Brisket in the Slow Cooker is crazy-delicious! Can I just tell you that there are good recipes and then there are OMG fantastic recipes. This Smoky Pulled Beef Brisket is OMG fantastic. It is smokey, savory, tender, moist, and full of flavor. There are so many ways to enjoy this amazing beef, but one of my favorites is loaded onto a bun to soak up all the fabulous juices. Then top with a melty cheese and some pickled onions for the perfect bite.
Pulled Beef Brisket to Expand Kids Protein Palettes
It’s important to me to expose my girls to a variety of foods because that’s the best way to get all of the vitamins and nutrients their little bodies need. We definitely gravitate more toward lean meat proteins such as chicken, primarily because it has less calories and fat for Dave and I. However, beef is a better source of iron and that’s very important.
So, after doing some research, I found out that brisket flat-half (the leaner half of the whole brisket) is actually considered a Lean meat! To be considered lean, a 3-oz serving of cooked beef must have less than 10 grams of total fat, 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat, and less than 95 mg of cholesterol. And if you do get a layer of fat on the brisket, you will see below how incredibly easy it is to remove and discard.
This Pulled Beef Brisket is a great way to get the girls to try beef and get more iron into their diet.

I made this recipe in a slow cooker. However, you could also make it in the oven in a dutch oven or small roasting pan with a lid.
PREP-AHEAD TO MAKE YOUR SMOKY PULLED BEEF BRISKET
We are all extremely busy and making dinner during the week can be overwhelming. Here are the steps you prepare in the day(s) in advance and store in the fridge as your meal Kit… (See the recipe below for more details)
Since this is a slow cooker recipe, you can make the entire brisket in advance and simply reheat it when you are ready to serve. Or you can do these couple simple steps ahead and cook it in the slow cooker on a weekday morning to enjoy that night!
Prepping ahead simply involves dicing the onion, mincing the garlic, and making the spice rub. For this spice rub, I used 2 different Paprikas. I used a Hungarian Hot Paprika which gives you all of the wonderful peppery flavor without as much smoke. I also used Smoked Paprika for subtle smoky flavor. If you want more smoke, you can just use double the Smoked Paprika in place of the Hungarian Hot Paprika. However, you may want to consider adding a touch of Cayenne then for background heat.
Aside from the Paprika, I have garlic powder, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
Finally, you can cut the Brisket into 2-3 pieces so that it fits into the slow cooker and then rub the spices all over and store in the fridge until ready to cook.
COOK YOUR SMOKY PULLED BEEF BRISKET
When you’re ready to cook this baby, add half of the diced onion to the bottom of the slow cooker insert first. Place the brisket pieces on top of the onion. Add the remaining diced onion and minced garlic. Pour Worcestershire sauce and beef broth over the roast.
Cook roast in slow cooker for 4-6 hours on High setting or 8-10 hours on Low.
Once the brisket is done cooking, remove it from slow cooker to a plate or cutting board for pulling or shredding it apart.
Using a knife or a fork, scrape away any layer of fat. It should come off very easily. Discard the fat.
Then using 2 forks, start to shred the meat. If the piece of meat is really large, you can cut it in half so the beef strands are not too long.
Once the meat is shredded, add it back to the cooking liquid in the slow cooker.
Now, comes the fun part…eating! I love to eat this deliciousness on a roll that soaks up all the beef juices. I place the beef on the bottom of the roll and top with a melty cheese like monterey jack or mozzarella. Then put it under the broiler to melt! Finally, I top it with pickled onions to add sweetness, tang, and crunch!
However, you can also eat this plated with Roasted Garlic Cauliflower Mash or any starch such as polenta, risotto, rice, pasta, or potatoes.
